Description

I think you can intuitively guess most of the advice in this book, or just by googling "how to stop tech addiction. I discovered that living the life we want requires not only doing the right things, it also requires we stop doing the wrong things that take us off-track.

While removing external triggers is helpful in keeping distractions out, pacts are a proven way of reining ourselves in, ensuring we do what we say we're going to do.Imagine we’ve just discovered that a facial recognition algorithm is amplifying some racial inequality. It's a timely and pretty important book as the modern age of technology appears to have become like opium to some. I'm coming clean today, telling this story for the very first time in its raw, ugly detail," she said.

There, he found himself wading in a pool of water, while above his head dangled a tree ripe with fruit ready for the picking. The best part of this entire book was his advice on setting guidelines on tech usage with your kids, partner, and your friends. However, because all human behaviour is motivated by the desire to minimise discomfort, the “root cause” of distraction therefore lies within us. Though some of these things seem dull in comparison to today's enticements, distractions have and always will be facts of life.

Overall, this book served the purpose of being a broad, high-level introduction to the topic of becoming indistractible, but didn’t have enough substance to take it all the way. I'm quite surprised that after popularizing the "Hooked" model and even mentioning it at the beginning of this book; the author offers such impractical advice. I would come home, and while I was eating, or while I was reading, or while I was eating and reading at the same time, or while my husband was trying to talk to me, I would be going in this circuit between the living room and the kitchen and the dining room and the living room and the kitchen and the dining room. Fortunately, we, unlike Tantalus, can step back from our desires, recognize them for what they are and do something about them.

Whether you read the summaries or the full book, don’t expect a fully flesh out investigation on what it takes to eliminate distractions from your life. This book has a different take and doesn't advocate a digital detox or even mindfulness and meditation. I highly recommend this book as something that will reclaim your focus and attention and help you navigate this world of distraction. In Indistractable, behavioural designer Nir Eyal reveals the hidden psychology driving you to distraction.

Hardcore fans of productivity/self-help geared towards harnessing technology will probably find this useful and interesting but I think there are better options overall. On the right side of the continuum is "traction," which comes from the Latin trahere, meaning to draw or pull. Whilst this is great for companies who want people to consume their products, it is not great for the individuals who just can't navigate this world of distraction. Oftentimes it is less about the pull of the thing that is distracting you than an attempt to escape a preexisting discomfort in the moment.
