Description

Supporting her task is her hobby of tracing family trees and gathering DNA samples, all in pursuit of a familial connection and a name for the Brighton Mermaid.

I love a good thriller but I don’t think I’ve read one with much family drama – it sounds like a fab combination! Dorothy joked that she has invented a new genre, the emotional thriller, and this label definitely sums up the journey in this novel. An example being when she forced her partner and sister to sit in a room and discuss their issues with each other. I was totally surprised by how everything played out and commend the author on her great writing and characterisation.

I wanted to know what had really happened all of them years ago, who was behind the murder and what had happened to Jude. Tendo lido já todos os livros da autora, por isso, parti para a leitura deste livro muito entusiasmada!

When her paranoia gets too high she imagines the worse scenarios, which then make her switch on others. My only regret is that I read it so soon after getting it so that I now probably have another years wait for another book from this superb author. The story is told in a mix of past and present as we are brought up to date with Nell's life and why 25 years on she is obsessed with discovering the identity of the Brighton Mermaid. It had been building to a fast paced, action packed, adrenalin fuelled finale where all those burning questions that you will have from reading the rest of the book get some answers. A great cast of characters and some pretty gritty themes feature throughout the book: institutional racism, coercion, OCD, anxiety, guilt/obligation, privilege, abuse, how vulnerable people can slip between the cracks of society.
